Cortisol causes a whole host of problems. Do you have more than 5 of the following? It may be time for a health review. Yes, everyone deals with stress on a daily basis. It is what you do to prevent a negative outcome that will help to ensure longevity.
Ten Signs you have too much Cortisol
-
Sleeping difficulties.
At night, your cortisol levels are supposed to decrease. This allows your body to relax and repair. Do you feel tired all day long, only to get an energy surge at bedtime? Then the night proceeds to have you tossing and turning, only to leave you feeling tired all day long. This is a sure sign of elevated cortisol levels.
-
Feeling tired all the time.
In the long term, your adrenal glands become depleted from producing too much cortisol. This leads to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, creating that tired all the time feeling.
-
Increase in body weight, especially in the mid-section, although you are eating healthy and doing exercise.
Abdominal weight gain is a direct cause of too much cortisol. Measure your waist circumference often to make sure there is no drastic change. A diet low in sugar and carbohydrate is also advised.
-
Catching colds and infections become the norm.
Elevated cortisol impairs your immunity, making you a target for all germs and alike. Due to the fact that your natural self-repair mechanisms are deactivated by this, you tend to be sick all the time.
-
Unhealthy food cravings.
Diabetes is one of the risk factors that cortisol is directly linked to. It raises your blood sugar, which in turn raises your insulin. This then creates a drop down to low blood sugar levels. And that, is when you start feeling like a slice of cake or two.
-
Increased frequency of body pain and headaches.
Your adrenal glands become depleted from producing too much cortisol. This leads to increased prolactin levels, making your body’s joints more sensitive to pain. Too much cortisol also hyper-sensitizes the nerves of the brain, leading to headaches.
-
Decreased libido.
Cortisol causes libido inducing hormones such as testosterone, to drop, among other things… Thanks a lot cortisol!!
-
Unhappy gut
Stress hormones cause sensitivity in your gastrointestinal system. This can create symptoms such as constipation, nausea, heartburn, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
-
Anxiety attacks and problems.
Stress hormones can lead to jitters, nervous stomach, feelings of panic, even paranoia. This will keep you awake for sure!
-
Depression
Your “happy hormone” called serotonin is suppressed by cortisol. This may lead to depressive states or low emotions.
