Summer is on its way, which means that now is the time to dust off our summer bodies and get ready for some fun in the sun! Like a rising tide, we tend to pick up a few extra pounds over winter. Now is the time for the tide to reverse, but wait! What’s that on my thighs?
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is a common condition where the skin appears dimpled or lumpy, often compared to the texture of an orange peel or cottage cheese. It typically occurs on areas like the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and sometimes the arms.
Factors Leading to Cellulite
Cellulite forms when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin. This creates an uneven surface, leading to the characteristic dimpling effect. Several factors contribute to the development of cellulite.
- Gender: The structure of fat cells and connective tissue differs between men and women, with women being more prone to developing cellulite due to how their fat is stored and distributed.
- Age: As we age, the skin loses elasticity and becomes thinner, making cellulite more visible. Additionally, the connective tissue weakens, making it easier for fat cells to protrude through the skin.
- Genetics: If your family members have cellulite, you may be more likely to have it as well.
- Lifestyle: Diet, physical activity, and hydration levels can influence the appearance of cellulite. Poor circulation, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle can exacerbate the condition.
People of all body types can have cellulite. It is not necessarily related to being overweight, though excess fat can make cellulite more noticeable.
How to Manage Cellulite
While cellulite is harmless, many people seek to reduce its appearance for cosmetic reasons. There are a number of different approaches you can take, and combining multiple approaches often gives the best results.
- Topical creams and oils that stimulate the circulation and tone the skin.
- Spa treatments like cupping massage, dry brushing, lymphatic drainage, and body wraps improve circulation and skin texture.
- Regular exercise to reduce the body fat later.
- Laser therapy, radiofrequency, and acoustic wave therapy are advanced medical treatments that destroy the structure of cellulite.
No matter your relationship with cellulite, remember that accepting and embracing your body as it is can also contribute to a positive self-image, regardless of the presence of cellulite!
Essential Oils for Cellulite
We have selected four amazing, pure essential oils that work together to support the body to naturally remove cellulite by targeting the underlying causes of cellulite and the appearance of cellulite. These oils work in combination to:
- Detoxify – by removing excess fluids and toxins from the skin, there is less pressure on the underlying fat cells to push against the connective tissue above, visibly reducing the appearance of cellulite and giving skin a smooth texture.
- Improve circulation – better circulation means more oxygen gets to the tissues, and more waste products are removed, both of which contribute to a reduction in cellulite formation and retention.
- Calm inflammation – cellulite can cause inflammation in the tissue around it, leading to puffiness, swelling, and uneven skin texture.
- Tone and tighten – the astringent effect tones the skin, reducing the appearance of cellulite.
- Protect – high in antioxidants that protect and maintain skin elasticity.
Buchu is known for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and detoxifying properties. By removing excess fluids and toxins from the skin, and reducing inflammation in areas where there is cellulite, the visible appearance of cellulite is reduced. It further has toning action that also may reduce the appearance of dimpling associated with cellulite.
Coriander is known for its anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and antioxidant properties. Similar to Buchu, its anti-inflammatory effect reduces the appearance of dimpled skin. It aids the body in eliminating toxins and excess fluids, the build-up of which contributes to the formation of subcutaneous fat cells. As an antioxidant, coriander helps to maintain skin elasticity and firmness, making cellulite less apparent.
Mandarin is known for its rejuvenating, detoxifying, and toning properties. It enhances circulation, making skin appear radiant, while removing excess fluids and toxins from the skin. Mandarin tones and firms the skin, while its high content of Vitamin C protect the skin’s elasticity, both of which reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Orange peel essential oil, also known as sweet orange oil, is known for its uplifting scent and beneficial properties for the skin, similar to that of mandarin. It is detoxifying, toning, and has antioxidants to maintain skin elasticity.
